My Story
My Story
My name is Curtis L. White, also known as Brother C.L. White, the singer. I grew up in a small town in Florida and began singing gospel music at the age of six. Music and singing was always a family affair. My siblings and I formed a group, The White Singers. Later, I would sing with groups such as The Messengers, A Touch of Harmony, and The Faithful Few.
As a star basketball player in high school and college, I received many plagues, trophies, and media attention. I was afforded the opportunity to attend try-outs at several camps sponsored by the European International Basketball Association, which is a branch of the NBA. The camps gave me a chance to see the other side of life. Seeing this other side, I thought within myself whether I wanted fame, fortune, power, or Jesus. So, being an inexperienced youth and a babe in Christ, I decided I wanted Jesus and gave up my dream of an NBA career and began to seek the souls of men (a fisher of men).
Living in a small town had its advantages and disadvantages. One, advantage was being an assistant coach where I continued to encourage and support high school students in athletic activities, especially basketball!
Later, I met and married my wife, of 33 years, Charleta Brigham. We are the proud parents of Curtis, Jr., Catrice, Cynthia and Lashawn; and two grandchildren Saniya and Curtis Alexandros Thompson.
Our family would later experience difficult times. Charleta was seriously ill and needed a kidney transplant. During those difficult times, family and friends only lasted a little while. When family and friends were not available or simply failed her, Charleta had to drive from Lawtey to Gainesville for dialysis treatment, sometimes two or three times a week. The hospital had become like Charleta’s second home for months. The children were young during the time of their mother’s illness and my sister, Ora, assisted my family and made sure the children were cared for, clean, and ready for school.
Working full-time at Lawtey Correctional Institute, as a Corrections Officer and White’s Lawn Care took its toll on my health. My health began to fail due to stress and staying at the hospital all night. Eventually, I had to let go of both jobs.
In dire need of funds to cover medical expenses for my wife and provide for my family, I started traveling as a soloist in 1995, until a need arose for a full time minister at my congregation, the Lawtey Church of Christ. I had the desire to fulfill that need and was given the opportunity. Thus, God has blessed me to be the minister there for 14 years.
My latest album “Walk Around Heaven” includes traditional favorites such as, The Banks of Jordan, Glory, Glory Hallejuah, You Don’t Know How Blessed You Are and It’s Just Another Day.
I believe my sermons are filled with the “good news” of Christ to assist us in our daily lives, with sermons such as “It’s Time To Make A Change, “Keep It Real”, “Saints Or Aint’s”, “The Neglected Mother”, “The Battle From Within”, “The Spouse In Your House”, “Silly Women and Men That Are Creeps” and “What A Savior Is He”.
Despite making a young adult decision to forgo the possibilities of a profitable basketball career over 22 years ago, financial hardships, and Charleta being ill for approximately 18 years God was still a provider. Throughout all of our trials and tribulations, the Lord is allowing Charleta to adapt to her new kidney , which she received 8 years ago, God has preserved me and my voice to be strong and sound. My children are now adults and I am now able to pursue my strongest and humble desire to utilize my time, travels, and talents to touch people’s lives through and ultimately, for Christ. It is my desire to touch the masses through The Oprah Show.
Therefore, I am asking that you assist me in this endeavor by forwarding my story. Come on facebook friends and help me to spread the word and make this desire a reality!
